MySQL, MariaDB, TiDB & PlanetScale

Connect to MySQL and the MySQL-wire-compatible engines.

MySQL, MariaDB, TiDB and PlanetScale speak the MySQL wire protocol and share one connection form. Pick the engine that matches your host so rdSQL applies the right dialect quirks.

Connect#

  1. Click New Connection.
  2. Set a Connection Name and choose MySQL, MariaDB, TiDB or PlanetScale as the Database Engine. If your host matches one of the Provider Presets, pick it to pre-fill the details.
  3. Fill in Host, Port, Database, Username, Password.
  4. PlanetScale and many managed MySQL hosts require TLS — set SSL Mode accordingly.
  5. For databases behind a bastion, use the Security & SSH tab.
  6. Click Test, then Save.

One connection, many databases#

MySQL-family servers host many databases per server, so a single connection can browse and query every database on it — switch databases from within the connection instead of creating a new one. The Database field is optional: leave it blank to connect to the server first and pick a database after.

Troubleshooting#

  • Access denied for user — confirm the user has privileges from your connecting IP ('user'@'%' rather than 'user'@'specific-host').
  • PlanetScale connection fails — PlanetScale requires TLS; make sure SSL Mode is on.
  • Unknown database — the Database field is a starting database, not a restriction; leave it empty and pick the database after connecting.
  • Caching sha2 authentication — supported out of the box, including the legacy mysql_native_password protocol.
