Overview

What rdSQL Desktop is, how it is built, and which engines it speaks to.

rdSQL Desktop is a native, ultra-fast database workspace for developers. One app connects to every engine you use, with a SQL editor, table explorer, backup and restore, schema compare, a visual ERD canvas, an S3-compatible object browser, and an AI assistant that knows your schema.

It is built with Tauri v2 + Rust on the backend and React 19 + TypeScript on the frontend, so it ships as a small native binary instead of an Electron bundle — native speed, native menus, native windows, and no bundled Chromium.

What you can do with it#

  • Query and edit data — a Monaco-based SQL editor with autocomplete and formatting, plus an inline-editable, virtualized data grid that stays fast on millions of rows.
  • Browse any schema — tables, views, columns, keys, indexes and triggers in one tree, for every engine, plus dedicated browsers for MongoDB collections and Redis keys.
  • Back up, restore, migrate — copy tables and rows to a .sql file, to S3/R2, or straight into another connection; restore pg_dump and mysqldump scripts of any size.
  • Compare and sync — diff schema and row data between two connections and generate a sync script in the target engine's own dialect.
  • Draw your schema — a visual ERD studio with auto-layout and SVG export.
  • Manage object storage — browse AWS S3, Cloudflare R2 and MinIO buckets next to your databases.
  • Ask AI about your data — bring your own API key and generate, explain or optimize SQL grounded in the live schema.

Supported engines#

Any S3-compatible object store (AWS S3, Cloudflare R2, MinIO) can be added as a storage connection too.

Architecture#

Each engine talks to its server through a native Rust async driver — there is no JDBC bridge, no ODBC setup, and no proxy between you and the database:

  • PostgreSQL family (PostgreSQL, Neon, CockroachDB, YugabyteDB) — tokio-postgres over TCP with TLS.
  • MySQL family (MySQL, MariaDB, TiDB, PlanetScale) — mysql_async.
  • SQL Server — TDS protocol via tiberius, no ODBC driver needed.
  • SQLite — embedded rusqlite.
  • DuckDB — embedded duckdb-rs.
  • Cloudflare D1 — HTTPS REST API with a bearer token.
  • MongoDB / Redis — native async clients for each protocol.

Connection passwords and API keys stay on your machine; the AI assistant calls your provider directly from the app. See Account, Sync & Privacy for the details.
